It can all seem so random, sometimes. But if there’s anything humans are great at, it’s finding a pattern in chaos.
Finding your purpose in life could extend your lifespan, but many people are out there still looking for it. If that sounds like you, you may need some pointers.
Let’s take a look at the seven steps to discover your purpose in life.
1. Accept the Journey
Finding your purpose isn’t always a short journey. Some will spend decades doing it. Many famous people didn’t become known until their later years and lived many lives before that.
Accept that finding your purpose is a journey. And like all journeys, it’s not always about the destination.
2. Imagine Your Perfect Future
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”. It may be a trite job interview question, but it’s the perfect way to find out your own desires.
Given infinite resources, where would you choose to be? Whether it’s rich, famous, settled with a family, or even just comfortable and content, your answer probably holds a clue to your purpose.
3. Find Your Talent
If you answered with a reflexive “I don’t have a talent,” then let us stop you there.
Talents don’t appear overnight. 99.9% of talented people you’ve ever heard of worked hard to make it happen. Finding your talent isn’t about being an instant genius.
It’s about finding the will to stick with something you’re determined to master.
Finding your purpose could be a case of choosing to work on your talent, starting today.
4. Imagine What Other People Say
What other people say about us is almost as much of “us” as what we think in our heads. So listen.
What do you people say about you? The qualities they mention may form the foundation of your life’s purpose.
5. Take Some Time Out
Sometimes we need to just stop and think. Easier said than done, in our busy world.
Take some time out for yourself. Take a step back and look at your situation from a distance. If you were a stranger to yourself, what advice would you give?
6. Start in Small Ways
There are never enough hours in the day. So use every day of the year instead.
Most of us don’t have the luxury of infinite time. Break down the pursuit of your goals into smaller steps you pursue on a regular schedule. Before you know it, you’ll be most of the way there.
7. Read What Others Have Said
You aren’t the first to struggle with your purpose in life. Everyone from people on the street to the famous names of history has tangled with the question.
Read what they have to say and learn from them. They may just give you some ideas about what your purpose is or how to find it.
Discovering Your Purpose In Life
With these seven steps, you should be able to move toward finding your purpose in life. There’s no guarantee it’ll be a short journey. But a journey you start today will be over before one you start tomorrow.
Take what steps you can now so you can enjoy your purpose to its fullest.
